Shyamal Dutta Ray was one of the most accomplished water colourists of modern Indian art. The artist started his career learning oil painting and then switched over to water colour. Despite his mastery over the technique it never comes across to the viewer as overriding the subject's expressional content. He fashioned images out of his direct perception of the reality surrounding him. One of the masters of Indian modern art, he will be a favorite with art galleries and collectors alike for years to come.
